judo payments launches £1 million competition to support UK-based mobile app start-ups

Open to new and early stage companies building apps for Apple or Android

  • Winners to use judo platform to integrate payment services into apps
  • £100,000 of free credit and debit card processing will be awarded to ten promising new businesses

London, June 26th, 2013:  judo payments, one of the UK’s leading mobile phone card payment providers, today announced a £1 million competition aimed at entrepreneurs and early stage companies building apps for Android and Apple phones. judo will award £100,000 in free credit and debit card processing to 10 promising new UK based businesses looking to simplify the payment of services provided by their apps.

The winners of the competition will be given the opportunity to use judo’s payment processing platform, which makes it simple to integrate card processing in Apple and Android apps for one or many business users.  For example, an entrepreneur will be able to create an app that makes it simple to order and pay from a table at a restaurant and sell that app into thousands of restaurants with card processing fully included using judo’s platform.

Dennis Jones, CEO of judo said: “Businesses have a hard time creating an easy way for consumers to pay for goods or services within their Apple and Android apps, leading to conversion rates at less than half of what we typically see for online businesses.  For start-ups, the challenges and expense of building back-end systems for payment processing leave many businesses struggling. They either don’t have a way to simplify payment transactions or they spend most of their investment building the payments portion of their solution, leaving app functionality lacking.  Consequently, many apps fail to become profitable and don’t make it past their first year. judo makes it easy to integrate the building block of payments into mobile apps for all businesses so developers can focus on the quality of the apps and services they provide.”

In addition to being a UK based start-up, candidates for the competition must be building or have built an app for Apple and/or Android and have less than £10,000 of processing history. Priority will be given to businesses that are close to launching their solution and have unique or innovative business models.

There will be two selection rounds with five companies selected in each round. The first round of applications will be due on July 10th with the selections announced on July 14th. The second round of applications will be due on July 23rd with the selections announced on August 5th.

Businesses can apply by going to the judo website, clicking on the application link and filling out the competition form.
